What exactly is the intellectual property transfer process? Specifically, what steps should be taken in each situation?

When transferring, inheriting, or merging a business that includes intellectual property (such as patents and trademarks), it is necessary to complete the procedures for transferring those intellectual property rights, which requires filing an “Application for Registration of Transfer” with the Japan Patent Office. For the main scenarios—such as transfer, inheritance, and merger—the required documents and fees vary depending on whether the entire intellectual property right is being transferred or only a portion of it.
This service does not provide direct support for patent applications or intellectual property management itself. Instead, we will assess whether we can introduce you to specialists who can assist with these processes, such as qualified patent attorneys, lawyers, consulting professionals, or other experts. After hearing the facts of your case—such as what research results you have patented—and your vision for how you wish to utilize that intellectual property in your business, we will determine if there is someone who can assist you.
Please refer to the Japan Patent Office website for information on patent application procedures.
